On the threshold of a new year...

Since the end of this year is very close, let's take a moment to remember the horror of the past. The tragedy that happened is called "War". No matter how much these "disgusting people" practice Newspeak, this has long been obvious to everyone. We have entered the most difficult moment of modern history, and we will need to build a bright future on the scorched fields of our beautiful countries. This year has brought unimaginable pain and suffering, loss of life, destruction of homes, communities and hopes.

Even if my personal experience is difficult to compare with the horror experienced by my friends from Ukraine. I also lost the house that I built for the rest of my life, the main and beloved city of my life. And the distance with my relatives has grown to the scale of thousands of kilometers, and thus has taken away from me the most valuable thing - the time spent with them.

It is necessary to recognize the sad and deplorable reality - the ugliness of the minds of the people who govern us and who support them, monstrous irresponsibility and endless jams have led to such devastating consequences. But even in the face of tragedy, we must not forget to live and open the eyes of the blind. Beauty and goodness will surely overcome ignorance and ugliness.

As we enter the new year, let's redouble our efforts to end this conflict. And also, please, let's remember those who died in the name of peace and the defense of their home, who are in prison for our freedom and stand in solidarity with those who continue to endure the hardships of war. Let us work for a future of mutual understanding and cooperation in which the horrors of the past are but a distant memory.

Happy New Year everyone! May the damned 2022 never repeat itself in our lives. May the New Year at least bring us closer to the end of this horror!

New Year and vintage aesthetics

Vintage covers of the New Year's editions of Vogue, The New Yorker and Harper's Bazaar. Created by artists in the last century, but still carry the incredible elegance and atmosphere of the new year.

I love that vintage aesthetic!

Ghost girls Kazuki Takamatsu

It seems that the Japanese artist Kazuki Takamatsu is engaged in digital painting, but this is not so:
all his works are made by hand. The thinnest layers of white gouache lie on top of each other over a black background, thus creating the feeling of a three-dimensional image.

This elegant author's technique of the artist was called Depth Mapping, which can literally be translated as "deep image". It is thanks to the unusual style that the figures in the paintings look refined and ghostly, being somewhere in the space between reality and virtuality.

Is it necessary to name
to your paintings?

Some artists name their brainchild in the process of work, others head the masterpiece even before it is created. There are also those who prefer to leave their works without a name, allowing the viewer to draw their own conclusions.

There are several reasons why it is important to name your work:

•Unique component

The title will distinguish your work from other works of art. It will help judges, jury members, gallery visitors to understand the meaning that they have before them a unique product of creative thought.

•Understandable intent

The title will help the viewer understand what you were thinking when creating the picture. The untitled work leaves him alone with his own interpretation, which may not always be correct.

•The name will help your creation
to be discovered in online search

Therefore, it is better to come up with small names that are easily recognized by search engines, but at the same time, too simple and monosyllabic ones should be avoided. They are too general
about the picture and get lost among the many requests.

How to come up with
a good name?

It should be short, precise, not "hackneyed" and "eternal", that is, it should not change. This is especially important if you create a catalog of your work or participate in exhibitions.

If there are no thoughts of your own, ask friends or family to look at the picture with a fresh eye and answer what they would call it. Perhaps they will come up with ideas that will spark your imagination. Turn to movies, music or books. A line from a song, a quote from a book or a movie can give a picture a very original title.

Another option, if it doesn’t work out at all, use a service where you can hold your own name contest and choose the best.

Once I took part in a performance
by Liu Bolin at the Erarta Museum
in St. Petersburg.

Then the journalist of the Sobaka.ru magazine and I stood motionless for five hours, during which we were covered with paint until we completely “merged” with the painting by the artist Pyotr Gorban “Gardens of Eden”.

Before this performance, I already was familiar with the work of the artist. I liked that he doesn't just become invisible, but is part of the location in which he is located, so he can turn into anyone. And this is a real superpower that we then tested on ourselves.

Disappearing Artist

Liu Bolin creates his work using the "creative camouflage" technique. This technique involves painting people under the objects of the environment, so that they become completely invisible to the eye.

An artist can “dissolve” in absolutely any landscape, no matter how difficult it may be, and merge completely, so that only people who know and are involved in the process can suspect his presence.

Invisibility, but with this physical presence, Bolin encrypts his political position: as the authorities of his native PRC, they often do not notice the problems of ordinary people.

“From my point of view, in modern society, the value of a person is constantly being destroyed. Even though living conditions are improving, people are erasing themselves in the fast-paced tide. What an amazing contradiction! I choose to disappear into different spaces, because each has its own meaning, ”says the artist.

Bolin's work expresses a kind of protest against the persecution of artists, censorship and lack of freedom of speech, and also raises questions about visibility, concealment, consumption and the environment. For example, focusing on social issues, Bolin recruited 20 homeless people into his team and performed with them to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness in the world.

When the time has come
bring your ideas to life

Dubai is a metaverse, and the most digitalized art in my life. I remember a cafe near Galata in Istanbul, where I caught myself thinking: “Here I am, drinking hot chocolate, drawing my colored spots on Wacom..and remember for a second that this is breathtaking for an exhibition in Dubai.”

The most delicious thought that causes strawberry butterflies is preparing your work for someone, and not just for yourself. The creation phase lasted from April to November. The stage of contemplation is from November to December, and the stage of emotions from memories never ends.

What did I feel when I realized that my exhibition was about to take place? Yes, I was getting ready for a wedding! Sew off a dress, think over the opening, buffet, drinks, music. I prepared an opening speech in English, gave an interview to a TV channel before the opening.

At this point, your clamps dissolve into a creative turmoil. I want to emphasize that being creative means developing every day.

You don't just draw, you draw with different tools, learning texture and color. You come up with ideas, expanding your horizons. You communicate with the community from all over the world by learning foreign languages.

After a year with this canvas, I have cut my emotions “homesick” so much that now I don’t even want to go home. Creativity is a deep psychoanalysis, and exhibitions are its report.

I never know what my work will look like at the exit, but rather at the entrance to the opening of the exhibition. This is a real adventure. And in these adventures, encounters happen that change your life.

"Materialization of sensual ideas" - should not have been animated, if not for the message of Taisiya:"I want to revive your ideas." The people around me are real treasures. Either a 3-meter sculpture is created in Florence, or a 17-meter animation is created.

In the meantime, I want to say thanks to all the forces of Tasi - birds, wind and clouds for the message:"It's time to revive the ideas!".

AI can now create images
from the air

Artificial intelligence is now so advanced that just give it a few words and it will create an original scene based on your own description.

The results can be amazing, beautiful, fantastic, and sometimes eerily real. But they can also be dirty and grotesque: distorted faces, emptiness and twisted architecture.

How does it all work?

Researchers feed hundreds of millions of images from the Internet into the computer system. Each such image is paired with an accompanying description, so the computer learns to identify relationships between images and words.

For example, we chose an image of a dachshund in outer space and a stained glass style. After receiving the images and the corresponding text, the AI starts to connect the words describing the dachshund with its visual representation.

The AI creates an internal concept map by converting images and texts into numbers, assigning higher probabilities to some associations i.e. guitar playing often involves hands.

The researchers then add "noise" or visual clutter to the image dataset. Visual noise is a pattern of random dots or pixels, similar to television noise. This mess acts like an overlay, obscuring the original image.

More and more noise is then added to train the intellect to recognize that this image still contains a dachshund. So, the AI learns to subtract noise in order to return a heavily latent image to a sharp one.

Artificial intelligence is now so good at denoising images that it can generate an image consisting only of pure noise.

The AI now uses the human-provided hint to create the original image. However, the AI is still not perfect and the results can be unpredictable.

What is Phygital Clothing?

Just imagine that the world managed to take all the best from the physical and the environment and combine it into a unique phenomenon.

Figital clothing is a combination of "physical" and "digital". A person who purchases NFT clothing receives, in addition, a physical object or an exclusive service, which allows him to show his uniqueness to both worlds at the same time.

This incomparable experience helps to realize the special purchase of NFT. Especially if the token is not always exactly the same as the copy of the exclusive transit product.

Thus, from those discussed, Nike became the brand that received its select line of NFT clothing RTFKT x Nike AR Genesis, where the prestige of a sweatshirt with an NFC chip that enjoys the connection between clothing and the corresponding NFT is also recognized in the high score. you can easily bring physical hoodies to life.

Iceberg contact

Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson has scattered huge blocks of ice from the Nuup-Kangerlua fjord in Greenland in front of the Tate Modern in London. Thus, he intends to draw public attention to the problem of climate change.

In total, the installation included 30 melting blocks of ice - he placed 24 icebergs on the banks of the Thames near the Tate Gallery, and 6 icebergs were left to melt on the square in the business district of London near the Bloomberg buildings. 30 blocks - just a few of the thousands that fall into the sea every second, breaking away from the fjord.

Spectators are invited not only to look at the melting ice, but also to touch it, to smell it. “This is a physical process, it gives a clearer understanding of what environmentalists are talking about,” explains Eliasson. “Change can be seen, smelled and heard.”

Indeed, each melting block emits a barely audible crackle and hiss, and by bringing your face closer to the surface of the ice, you can breathe in the air that has frozen in the iceberg 10,000 years ago and is now being released.

Eliasson believes that it is in the nature of a person to focus only on those problems that are facing him here and now. Deciding to take this into account, he brought an illustration of the fragility of our world directly to the people.

According to the artist, the goal of the project was "to enable millions of people to face the consequences of their actions, to see and feel what we are losing."

Maybe it's contact with melting icebergs will help people change their behavior.
