Disappearing Artist
Liu Bolin creates his work using the "creative camouflage" technique. This technique involves painting people under the objects of the environment, so that they become completely invisible to the eye.
An artist can “dissolve” in absolutely any landscape, no matter how difficult it may be, and merge completely, so that only people who know and are involved in the process can suspect his presence.
Invisibility, but with this physical presence, Bolin encrypts his political position: as the authorities of his native PRC, they often do not notice the problems of ordinary people.
“From my point of view, in modern society, the value of a person is constantly being destroyed. Even though living conditions are improving, people are erasing themselves in the fast-paced tide. What an amazing contradiction! I choose to disappear into different spaces, because each has its own meaning, ”says the artist.
Bolin's work expresses a kind of protest against the persecution of artists, censorship and lack of freedom of speech, and also raises questions about visibility, concealment, consumption and the environment. For example, focusing on social issues, Bolin recruited 20 homeless people into his team and performed with them to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness in the world.
