Journey into the Dark Unknown
by
Aron Wiesenfeld

Artist Aron Wiesenfeld's work depicts people who seem caught or lost in the landscape that overwhelms them. Each of them has a story that is born out of the world beyond the canvas. It is these backstories that interest the artist: "The central theme of my paintings is the search for personal meaning in a confusing, chaotic and meaningless world. The protagonists of these paintings naively strive for a state of perfection with the moral clarity of youth. In their search they come to the brink of death," the artist shares.

The feeling that arises while viewing the artist's work is a mixture of independence and the crushing loneliness of visiting places where no one else can go.

The top 5 museum channels
YouTube channels for artists

A museum space is not just about the buildings, but also about the people who work in them. And these people know everything about art. Their videos are not just videos about museums, but full-fledged thematic channels. They talk about history, art and the museums themselves.

Tretiakoff Gallery

The official channel of the art museum reflects almost all of its activities. Here you can stroll through regular virtual exhibitions of both temporary and permanent exhibitions and listen to interesting lectures from museum researchers and guest art historians.

Museum MoMA

A treasure trove for anyone interested in museum life. In addition to lectures and other materials on sculpture, painting, photography, and multimedia art conveniently sorted into thematic playlists, the channel features videos on the specifics of restoration and the creation of new works of contemporary art, as well as other details of the museum's invisible work.

Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum channel is great if you can't imagine the art world without exploring fashion and costume history, love learning new things about the restoration of art objects, and just want to keep up with the current agenda of one of the world's most beautiful museums.

Tate Gallery

On its channel, the Tate, in addition to interviews with artists, recordings of lectures and events, puts out entire thematic series. The Unlock Art series, for example, showcases art from the mouths of famous artists, musicians and writers, and The Lost Art series covers art lost for a variety of reasons.

The Garage Museum

Garage Museum channel includes lectures on contemporary art and architecture, recordings of conferences with artists, art historians and art critics, and virtual exhibitions curated by the museum's staff.

Korea has created an AI that enables video communication
with the deceased

Korea was able to create an artificial intelligence that allows you to speak by video call with deceased relatives. According to the creators, in seven hours, the AI will study the person and his habits while the interviewer asks personal questions. During this period of time, a digital copy will be produced that will live forever.

The Korean company DeepBrain has presented a very controversial development. This is how its creators have described it. It is a video chat with the deceased. Re; memory is a technology that allows you to create a digital clone of a deceased person.

"Some people like the possibility of living forever this way, but many people find it untrustworthy. Re;memory is best suited for people with terminal illnesses, such as cancer, who can spend hours in front of a camera so the software can study their demeanor and collect voice data," said Murphy, the company's manager.

As conceived by the authors of the project, the dying person has to get to their studio, where company employees will record their voice, appearance, as well as character traits. Also the person could bring diaries that he kept during his life, provide photo and video files - all of this staff will save in the system.

The company claims this data will be enough to create a digital clone. It will talk and interact with the interlocutor just as a living person would. The copy will remember all the information about the "original".

U.S. artist denied rights to AI-driven comic book

The U.S. Copyright Office has reviewed the copyright protection it granted to artist Kristina Kashtanova for her comic book "Zarya of the Dawn," whose illustrations were drawn by the Midjourney neural network.

The bureau ruled that Kashtanova "authored the text of the work and the selection, coordination and arrangement of the written and visual elements of the work." However, the images themselves "are not the product of human authorship."

The Copyright Office claims that it only learned that the images were made by AI after the registration was issued, based on Kashtanova's social media posts. The original certificate was issued based on "inaccurate information," and so it will be revoked. Representatives of the organization stressed that artistic works must be created by people in order to use the copyright law.

In support of its decision, the bureau cited precedents of people failing to seek protection for lyrics and songs authored by "non-human spiritual beings" - a similar ruling was made on selfies taken by a monkey.

The artist expressed disappointment with the bureau's decision - in her opinion, a work should be protected by copyright unless it is created by AI in its entirety. The bureau disagreed with her findings and also rejected the claim that copyright could be registered on the grounds that AI-created images were subject to subsequent human adjustments: those edits were either minor or their extent could not be ascertained at all based on the information provided.

"My attorneys are exploring our options to clarify to the Copyright Office how the individual images created by Midjourney are a direct expression of my creativity and thus subject to copyright protection," Kashtanova concluded.

Time to slow down a bit...

For the first time in my life, I decided to slow myself down with those projects that give me results, and I can share them immediately on social media. Now I've chosen a different approach. I'm gaining strength, sitting in this silence that feels like there's nothing to tell. And in fact, incredible changes are taking place. For example a change in approach. I don't spoil the canvas, but first I make a sketch and learn how to turn it into a complete painting. This time, I do everything slowly, to define my skills precisely, to awaken the artist in me. I started with graphic art and then I will move on to oil painting.

AI learned to identify an
artist by strokes

Experts at Rutgers University and the Dutch Atelier de Restoration created artificial intelligence by decomposing nearly 300 masterpieces by Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani and other artists into 80,000 separate strokes, and then a recurrent neural network learned to identify the artist from them.

The artificial intelligence is able to spot a fake by looking at the nature of the stroke, which can be described by a variety of characteristics, such as shape, length, uniformity of thickness and other parameters.

The accuracy in determining authenticity was about 80%. The scientists then asked artists to paint paintings in the style of the masters of the past to test the AI's ability to recognize fakes. The artificial intelligence performed well in all cases, without resorting to in-depth analysis, simply by looking at the strokes.

So far, the technology has been able to authenticate paintings with obvious strokes or brushstrokes, and scientists are about to confirm the results on paintings by other 19th-century artists.

Art is not about talent

Artists often send images of their work to people they don't even know, asking for their opinion. This is a very common mistake. It comes down to basically asking, "Do I have talent?" And often that means talent enough to be an artist, or, to be good enough to do what's called art. Or maybe we're just wasting our time?

That's the wrong question. In fact, if you're asking someone to confirm or deny your talent, it's time for you to stop, because that means you don't feel it in yourself. It's not about talent. Talent is not a good word because it implies that only a few people are capable of art, which is exactly the opposite.

You can't say that some people are endowed with abilities that others are not. Each of us has all the natural gifts that we tend to think are the privilege of the talented few.

What do you lose by believing
in artistic talent?

If you believe that only a few people can create art, and it requires talent, you will always try to paint in a way that meets some external standard, to get validation from someone else - galleries, awards, audiences. You'll always be fixing yourself, the place of being yourself. So you will ask of your painting, "Do I meet the standard?"

Yes, it takes time and patience, but realizing what's inside you is what art is about. Do you value your feelings? Or do you value growth by some external yardstick? Can you allow yourself to go further? Do you know that it's more about achieving a "state of inspiration" than it is about demonstrating skill and ability? If so, you're already on the right track. Show me what drives you. Leave the question of talent aside, each of us was born with a gift. Find it and show it. Then tell everyone what it feels like to be you!

Connecting opposites
Jennybird Alcantara

Artist Jenny Baird Alcantara in her works examines the complex relationship of contrasts, seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy. She uses the symbolism of duality to explore the connection between life and death, as well as between the beauty and cruelty of nature. The anthropomorphic qualities of her characters show the attitude to the world in which the artist lives.

"I imagine each of my paintings as part of a puzzle or just as part of a larger picture, I like to think of them as portals to another world. Every element, object, symbol and creature is in the work for a reason....I don't include anything unless she has a reason to be there," Alcantara shares.

How does an artist find
inspiration in a museum?

When we walk through a museum, we don't just see paintings and sculptures, we feel the ideas and emotions that informed the creation of these works. What if we slow down? Spend a little more time with a painting or sculpture that caught your eye for something?

Use museums for inspiration, looking at whatever catches your eye. Let your mind wander and imagine new creations. While paying attention to details, brush strokes or textures, and how it all comes together to create a finished work of art.

As you begin your walk through a museum, pick one wing in a museum or art gallery and start wandering around, mentally noting which paintings are appealing and which, conversely, are repulsive or uninteresting. Then go back to the painting that is persistently calling out to you. Say, if you have an hour to spare, you could wander around the museum for 30 minutes, and then spend the remaining 20-30 minutes by the painting or sculpture that you remembered most.

Take notes as you go through the museum, take a notebook or use your phone to jot down ideas, sketches, and notes about works of art that inspire you. These notes can prove incredibly useful when you go back to your workshop and try to create something new.

Grab your headphones with you and wander around the room to the accompaniment of your favorite music. Take pictures to remember what inspired you. You may want to put what you see on paper or draw something. So next time you visit a museum, take time to let yourself be inspired and see where your creative vision takes you.

FRIDA roboruka with AI
creates works of art

Carnegie Mellon University's Institute has a new "artist." FRIDA, a robotic arm with a brush attached to it, uses artificial intelligence to collaborate with humans on works of art.

The FRIDA robot can create unique paintings using photos, human cues or even music. The end result is somewhat similar to conventional finger painting.

Unlike similar robots, FRIDA analyzes its strokes in real time and makes corrections. The creators stated that FRIDA is a robotic painting system, but not an artist. FRIDA does not generate ideas - it is a system with which the artist could collaborate.

The robot uses artificial intelligence models similar to those used by tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and DALL-E 2, which generate text or images in response to requests.

FRIDA's creators call the robot a tool to enhance human creativity, aimed at encouraging human creativity rather than replacing it by giving people intuitive ways to express their ideas using natural language or image samples.
