Tesla sold most of its bitcoins
The largest manufacturer of electric vehicles Tesla, due to economic problems, sold about 75% of its bitcoins from April to June. As a result, the company earned $936 million. After the publication of Tesla's quarterly financial report, bitcoin sank from $23,700 to $23,000, then rose to $23,600, and is now trading at $22,900. Tesla is going through hard times against the backdrop of the global crisis and accelerating inflation. The report says that the company's revenue decreased from $18.76 billion in the first quarter to $16.93 billion in the second quarter.
The massive sale of bitcoins by the company did not come as a surprise - in early July, due to the crisis, Tesla's BTC volume decreased by $440 million. Recall that in 2021, Elon Musk had a significant impact on the price of bitcoin. A week before buying BTC, he changed the description of his Twitter profile to the word bitcoin, after which the rate of the first cryptocurrency increased by 15%.
Prior to this, the Tesla CEO identified himself as a supporter of BTC and opined that “Bitcoin is a good thing” and should get the public’s attention. In January of the same year, Tesla invested $1.5 billion in the first cryptocurrency. Against this background, Bitcoin jumped to a new high of $45,000.
Now the price of bitcoin has fallen by almost a third from the all-time high in November 2021, which led to losses of about 48% of assets for El Salvador, which owns about $56 million worth of bitcoins. El Salvador bonds with a maturity date in 2027 fell in price from 32 cents apiece to a record low of 26.3 cents.
Simon Waever, head of international strategy for emerging markets at Morgan Stanley, said that these securities fell by $7.7 billion and offered to buy them.
