ABOUT MASS BIRD EXTINCTIONS

Dear holders and animal lovers!

Bird Week at ARL is ongoing, which means there are still plenty of exciting topics to uncover!

Today, we're covering several mass bird extinctions, and their related causes.

ABOUT THE LITTLE GREBE

Our first story is about the Delacour's little grebe, a bird with extremely small wings, whose habitat was just as comparatively small.

This bird was found only on Lake Alautra, of the island of Madagascar;

Astonishingly, this species was finally recognized as extinct, not thousands or hundreds of years ago, but in 2010;

Last time the voice of this bird was heard was in 1988.

Scientists agree that the little grebe went extinct due to invasive species - humans introduced many new animals to the Alautra, causing the population of lake fish, the main food of the little grebes, to be severely reduced. Poaching has also had an impact: fishing nets have been set up all over the lake, entangling and killing the birds.

THE STORY OF THE STRAY PIGEON

The stray pigeon
is a tragic page in the history of the interaction between man and nature.

This species of pigeon lived mostly in North America;

In the 16th and 18th centuries, this species was the most abundant bird (various estimates range from 3 to 5 billion individuals);

Stray pigeons were still hunted by Native Americans, but the situation worsened in the 19th century, as Europeans settled on the continent.

The stray pigeons were shot in huge numbers, and the forests, their natural habitat, were cut down. The story of this amazing bird is a bitter example of how humans can wipe out a species, with a population of billions, in less than a century. We only have to learn from our mistakes, and never let such a nightmare happen again

Take care of the nature, friends! See you soon, and wait for our further posts - something really exciting awaits you
