WHALE'S WEEK: THE BLUE WHALE

Today, we’ll tell you about the blue whale. In our collection, it is far from the rarest representative, but it has earned everyone's attention and adoration, as it is the largest animal on our planet.

BLUE WHALE IN ARL

Name: ARL Balaenoptera Musculus
Tier: 2
SubTier: Common
Class: Mammals

WHY ARE THEY ABOUT TO BE EXTINCT?

The invention of the harpoon gun, in 1864, led to a dramatic decline in the blue whale population. The numbers of these giants began to decline rapidly, due to uncontrolled whaling. In 1963, the blue whale was nearly extinct, with no more than 5,000 individuals remaining worldwide.

Although in recent years there has been an upward trend, in the population of these animals, at present the blue whale is still very rare, with a total population of less than 15,000 individuals.

The greatest threat to the whales today is the severe pollution of the seas.
