The remake of the cult film The Toxic Avenger has been officially rated R due to the numerous images of blood and nudity. First released in 1984, Toxic Avenger tells the story of a mild-mannered teenager who falls into a barrel of toxic waste, making him a monstrous superhero.
Since then, the film has become a cult classic. Many critics and viewers praise its idiosyncratic tone and brutality.

In 2019, Universal officially announced that a remake of The Toxic Avenger is under heavy promotion at Legendary Entertainment, with original writers Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Hertz returning as producers.
The new version of The Toxic Avenger is written and directed by Macon Blair, best known for his debut with I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. The film stars Peter Dinklage, best known for his role in Game of Thrones. Previously, it was he who promised that the upcoming film will be "crazy" and "excessive."
The Toxic Avenger remake has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association, according to a new report from THR. The film received its rating for "violence and gore, sexual references, brief images of nudity and profanity", which is clearly in line with the rating and content of the original project.
